Recently we had a customer come in for a Ford Falcon XY GT HO 9 inch Diff rebuild and gear ratio change back to standard ratio.
We removed the complete differential assembly from the vehicle and stripped it completely down. We then placed all the parts into the hotwash to remove all dirt and grime from the outside and inside of the main housing and the crown wheel and pinion housing.
The old crown wheel and pinion was removed from the hemisphere and the new correct ratio crown wheel and pinion was installed using all new bolts.
The Differential was then re-assembled using all new bearings and seals, and the crown wheel to pinion backlash was set (the clearance between the two gears while in mech).
The pinion was installed into the housing using a new bearing crush washer that allows us to set the correct preload of the tapered roller bearings and then the crown wheel and hemisphere was installed with all new bearings and the preload set to OEM specifications.
This whole procedure of setting up the crown wheel and pinion is crucial for the differential to have no gear noise on acceleration or deceleration (commonly called diff whine).
The Differential has been fully assembled and now fitted back into the vehicle, then test driven to make sure it is all correctly set up back to OEM specifications. It was then handed back to the very happy customer.
