Here’s an example of how that would work:

The repair cost is $10,000, so they write it off instead of repairing it. You get paid $10,000 for a $15,000 vehicle, and they sell the car off at auction and make $4000-5000 back from the car. So for them in reality they only paid out about $5000, but you got less than your car was worth and can’t buy an equal replacement.

This then renders the car a total loss, and if ever discovered, would not only render the car unroadworthy but will severely reduce its resale value.
