Crash Data Recovery

Most modern cars are fitted with an Event Data Recorder (EDR), which records data at the time of an accident. National Assessing & Engineering have the equipment and expertise to recover the following crash data:

Edr Data

What Is An Event Data Recorder (EDR)?

An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is a device or function installed in a motor vehicle and its purpose is to record technical vehicle and occupant information for a brief period of time before, during and after a crash. The EDR function is typically located inside a vehicle’s airbag control module (ACM) and is capable of recording information (data elements) such as the vehicle’s indicated speed, brake pedal use, accelerator pedal input, steering wheel input, seatbelt status, airbag deployment performance information, crash severity and many more driver inputs and vehicle system status information.

Who Can Retrieve Event Data Records (EDR)?

EDR data is used today for vehicle crash research, accident investigation & reconstruction, product liability litigation, safety system field performance analysis and insurance claims. There is a select number of users which include police, OEM engineers and mechanical & forensic engineers like ourselves, that are certified to retrieve this data.

How Can Event Data Records (EDR) Be Retrieved?

Specialty Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) Tools are required to retrieve EDR data from crashed vehicles. Data can be retrieved through the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) connector but for severe crashes, where access to the OBD connector is not possible due to a damaged electrical system, the CDR tool can connect directly to the airbag control module (ACM) or electronic control unit (ECU) using one of many direct-to-module CDR cables. In some cases, the ACM and/or ECU will need to be removed from the vehicle and brought back to our workshop for data retrieval.

What Is the Crash Data Used For?

Accident Investigation

The CDR report provides information useful to accident reconstruction. CDR reports can confirm or provide additional data not found with traditional accident reconstruction methods. CDR can be beneficial to help determine cause/fault for legal actions or claim processing.

Vehicle Condition Validation

Vehicle History checks do not always reflect the complete vehicle history or repair information. An unreported accident or major body shop repair for a vehicle will never appear in a vehicle history report. A CDR report may indicate a hidden crash event(s) to alert the user to take a closer look at the condition of the vehicle. A CDR report can determine the structural integrity of the vehicle’s frame/suspension/steering and helps determine its value for any repair cost evaluation or vehicle replacement cost due to a total loss claim.

Car Accident Damage Claim Validation

A CDR report can contain useful information to help in the investigation for several types of claims and potentially answer key questions such as:

  • Who hit whom first?
  • How fast was the vehicle being driven?
  • Was the car “Hit-While-Parked”?
  • Do claimed injuries match the crash? Delta V data in CDR report will indicate crash severity
  • Was the driver/occupant using their seat belt? Seat belt status information is typically included in the CDR report
  • Who was driving and/or in the car at the time of crash? Occupant detection information is included in many CDR reports. Weight information from drivers and passenger seat. Seat position may indicate size of driver.

Personal Injury Claim Validation

Crash Data Recorder (CDR) information provides critical objective evidence for personal injury claims following vehicle accidents.

CDR data strengthens claims by offering Delta-V measurements that scientifically link crash forces to specific injuries, validating soft tissue injuries like whiplash that are often disputed, and confirming injury consistency with crash dynamics.

This technical evidence can demonstrate that claimed injuries match the recorded collision characteristics, counter insurance company challenges about injury exaggeration, and support cases involving pre-existing condition aggravation.

At National Assessing & Engineering, our technicians retrieve and analyze this data, translating complex vehicle information into clear evidence that improves negotiating positions with insurers, potentially increases settlements, and maximises chances for fair compensation in personal injury cases.
